With some new ships coming in to Grimmstar, I updated the visual effects for each ship. The goal was to create something photo-real while still complimenting the ship's overall design language and color scheme.
VFX were made using Niagara inside Unreal engine. Particles are parameterized so that we have full control over shape, size, color, color ramps, softness, etc. These values are hooked up to thrust levels inside the game's ships so their movement coincides with accurate-looking thrust effects.
